class="ez-toc-section" id="Understand_the_Assignment_Requirement_First">Understand the Assignment Requirement First

Students. You need to know the requirements of writing an assignment before even writing a word.

When I was a student and saw half of my class fail their assignments, my first instinct would always be that they did not study enough or submit incomplete work. But I was wrong the whole time.

Most students who fail their assignments do not suck at writing. They actually fail because they answer questions that were not asked.

So before you write a single word, sit down and meticulously read the assessment criteria. Understand what the professor is asking for in the question. Read once, twice, or thrice… actually, until you have a clear picture of it.

Ask yourself these questions:

What exactly is the question asking me to do? (Discuss, Analyze, Evaluate? All these are different things.

What is the required word count, and to what extent is it permissible to reduce or extend?

What is the referencing style being asked for? APA, MLA, Harvard, or any other?

Is there a marking rubric? And if so, which section carries the most weight?

Are there any specific sources or readings that are essential to include?

And most importantly, what is the submission deadline?

If there is any confusion, then reach out to your professor right away. DO NOT wait till the last moment. You can freely email them because most UAE professors welcome and even appreciate students’ concerns about their academics.

How to Make An Assignment Step by Step

The process of writing an assignment becomes manageable once you know what you are expected to do. If you are a student, then do not take it as sitting down to “write” something. Consider it as running a small project with different stages.

Below is the assignment writing breakdown, which is mostly used by experienced writers in the UAE:

Step

Task

Suggested Time

1

Understand the requirements

10%

2

Research and gather information

25%

3

Create an outline and structure

10%

4

Write the first draft

35%

5

Revise, proofread, and submit

25%

Notice one important aspect here. Writing the first draft (over which students focus the most) only takes 35% of the entire time. This proves that the work you perform, such as understanding the requirements, research, and creating an outline, is the core step on which writing is based.

One of the students I worked with, Ahmed, a final-year Engineering Management student at Dubai University, almost panicked and kept on asking me, “When will we start to write?” “We will definitely miss the deadline because we have not started writing the content yet.”

Did we miss the deadline? No

We started the first two hours refining his draft. Some pointers were unnecessary. Some of them were not credible. The evidence sources were missing. All these elements were fixed initially.

And then his draft looked much cleaner and refined as per the given guidelines.

Research and Gather Reliable Information

Good research does not mean dumping all relevant information you see. The focus should be on finding the right information from the right places.

And I am sorry to break this to you, but not everything available on Google is authentic. In fact, most of what appears on the first page of Google is not a valid academic source. So never rely on them for university-level work.

Where to find reliable sources:

JSTOR: This is a leading academic library that provides access to millions of academic journals and books. Its primary sources span the arts, humanities, and sciences

Scopus: This is a massive, abstracted citation database that features strict indexing standards that are perfect for conducting a literature review across multiple fields.

PubMed: This source is best used for biomedical and life sciences literature.

Google Scholar: This is a highly accessible research tool that helps to filter and locate academic papers, theses, and books across the web.

Library of Congress: This is the largest library in the world that offers unparalleled physical and online archives, historical documents, and data.

This is something really important: Never use Wikipedia for gathering academic data. And when I say never, I mean it, NEVER!

Create a Proper Assignment Structure

I always say this thing: research is the foundation, and structure is the architecture. No matter how exceptional your researched material is, if it lacks proper structure, then it also becomes hard to understand and even harder to mark for assessors.

Think of your assignment like a building. The reader (your assessor) needs to walk it through logically, room by room. And he bumped into the kitchen while he was expecting a living room at that place.

Below is the standard assignment structure for UAE universities:

Section

Purpose

Title page

This section identifies the work. It includes your name, course name or number, roll number, the name of the professor, and other necessary details.

Abstract (if asked)

A 150-250 word summary of the entire assignment

Introducion

This sets the scene, states your thesis, outline what follows

Body paragraphs

Presents your arguments, evidence, and analysis

Conclusion

This wraps up the entire assignment and restates the key points discussed

Reference list

Every source cited in the text is properly formatted

Appendices (if needed)

Supporting data, charts, and documents that are too lengthy for the assignment

For lengthier assignments, such as theses or dissertations, you will need to include a table of contents and an executive summary as well. If you are working on a university assignment, then this guide on how to make an assignment is the best source to seek guidance and understand the step-by-step process.

How to Write A Strong Assignment Introduction

An introduction is the key section of any assignment. It tells the reader about the topic and what will be discussed in the content further.

However, the introduction is the part that most students get wrong. And ironically, it is one of the crucial sections that sets the entire tone.

Your introduction needs to do three things well:

Hook the reader: You need to grab the attention of the reader from the beginning by adding a hook. A hook can be an engaging anecdote, a provocative quotation, or a startling fact.

Provide enough context: the introduction must have sufficient background information so the reader understands the landscape.

State your thesis: Emphasize what the main argument or position of your assignment?

Let me show you how this looks in practice:

Weak opening: This assignment will discuss the importance of leadership in organizations.

Does this statement tell the reader anything? No. it is only a statement of intention, not an argument.

Strong opening: “77% of organizations report a significant leadership gap (Deloitte, 2023). This question is no longer whether leadership matters, but what kind of leadership actually works in today’s complex, multicultural workplaces.”

You will notice that the second version makes a claim, it is strongly grounded in evidence, and also signals readers that something specific is about to come next.

For UAE university students specifically:

Try to add localized examples in your content as much as you can. For example, if you are writing about supply chain management, then reference how it plays out across the UAE ports. If you are writing about HR practices, then mention the unique dynamics of the workforce where over 90% of residents are expatriates (Global Media Insights, 2026).

Tips for Writing Effective Body Paragraphs

The body of the assignment is where the actual ‘academic writing’ begins. This is the section where you build your argument brick by brick, and also the section where you gain or lose the most marks.

I am assuming that you would know that there are different paragraphs written under this section. But this is what I need to tell you: Each paragraph must focus on one point. One. Not two. Not three. Just one. And also, each paragraph must follow a clear internal structure.

Use the PEEL method:

Point (P): State the main argument of the paragraph clearly in the first sentence. This tells the reader what the paragraph will demonstrate and connects to your overall essay prompt or thesis statement.

Evidence (E): Support your point with credible data, statistics, scholarly citations, or quotes. Never drop evidence without explaining it properly.

Explanation (E): Critically analyze the evidence. Explain why and how this evidence supports your initial point. This section answers the critical “So What?” question.

Link (L): This is where you conclude the paragraph by summarizing how this specific argument connects back to your main research question or transitions smoothly into the idea of the next paragraph.

Here is an example of the integration of the PEEL method in a CIPD assignment:

[Point]: Effective leadership behaviours are critical for fostering employee engagement and creating a supportive organizational culture.

[Evidence]: According to CIPD research, managers who showcase empathy and strong communication skills significantly boost employee motivation and overall well-being.

[Explanation]: This is because empathic leaders build trust and encourage staff to voice concerns and align with organizational goals. In a practical sense, when employees feel valued and understood by their management, they are much more likely to show discretionary effort. This leads to higher productivity and lower absenteeism.

[Link]: Therefore, developing core leadership competencies is not just an optional HR metric. It is a fundamental requirement for building a high-performing and sustainable workplace.

One more thing: Keep your paragraphs between 100 and 200 words. Paragraphs longer than this given word count can easily distract the focus on reader. And if you have two connecting points, then split it into two paragraphs.

How to Write a Clear and Concise Conclusion

Students often treat the conclusion as an afterthought. Something dashed off when they are tired and just need to fill in the count. But the conclusion paragraph holds much more importance. This is the last thing that the marker grades as per the rubric. So make it count.

Most importantly, a strong conclusion does not introduce a new idea. You cannot bring in statistics you forgot to mention earlier. The primary goal of a conclusion is to close the loop by reminding the reader about the thesis statement, restating key points discussed, and sometimes ending with a question that forces them to think.

Here is what to avoid:

Common conclusion mistakes

Why does it cost you marks

Starting with “in conclusion, this essay shows that…”

Add zero value in the section

Introducing a new argument or statistic

Confuses the structure entirely

Copying sentences from the introduction or main body paragraphs

Shows a lack of synthesis or reflection

Wrapping up in just two or three sentences

Feels lazy and unfinished

Offering no forward-looking thought or recommendation

Misses the chance to demonstrate deeper thinking

The conclusion of your assignment should be only a total of 10% of the entire word count. For a 2,000-word assignment, that is around 180-200 words.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Assignment Writing

I have reviewed hundreds of students’ assignments over the years, and there are some common mistakes that I have seen in almost every other document.

Starting your assignment a night before the deadline. This is the single most significant mistake that leads to poor grades. Always remember that procrastination is not a personality trait. It is a habit, one that you can change. So the tip is to start working on your assignment the week it is assigned. Do not wait till the last moment.

Misreading the question. We covered this point earlier. But it bears repeating because it happens so often. ‘Analyze’ does not mean ‘evaluate’. ‘Critically evaluate’ does not mean ‘list the pros and cons’. Make sure that you know the difference between academic command verbs clearly.

Referencing incorrectly. Most UAE students struggle with referencing the most. This creates plagiarism in the content that results in failure or even expulsion. Also, incorrect referencing is marked as unintentional plagiarism. Learn about the citation style, such as APA, MLA, or whichever is asked before you begin adding references.

Ignoring the marking rubric. If the assignment rubric says that 30% of marks go to critical analysis, and you spend 80% of your assignment stating what other people said, you have already made a huge mistake. Your work is far beyond what the marker had asked.

Submitting without proofreading. Typos, grammatical mistakes, and unclear sentences all reduce the readability of your work. After writing, give yourself a break, and then proofread and edit the content after some time.

Proofreading and Editing Your Assignment

This is my favorite part of the entire process, and something that most professional writers live by. The first draft is just the beginning, where you simply include every piece of information.

The interesting part is its editing and proofreading, where that raw content gets its shape and is delivered the right way.

The most important tip here is that once you have completed writing the content. Step back and stay away from your content for at least 24 hours or more (depending on the deadline). This break is necessary because when you read something immediately after writing, your brain fills in with what you meant to write. It skips noticing and focusing on what you actually wrote. (The Writing Center).

Your pre-submission proofreading checklist:

Does every sentence make a clear and understandable point?

Is the overall argument logical and easy to follow?

Does each paragraph stick to the main idea?

Are all in-text citations correctly formatted?

Does the reference list every source added in the content?

Is the word count within the acceptable range as per the guidelines?

Have you checked for spelling and grammar errors?

Is the formatting consistent throughout (font, spacing, headings)

Have you checked the content for plagiarism?

Use tools (free and premium):

Tool

What it does

Grammarly

Grammar, spelling, tone, and clarity suggestions

Hemingway Editor

Highlights overly complex sentences and passive voice

Quillbot

Helps to paraphrase without changing the context

Turnitin

Checks for plagiarism similarity

There is one tip that students do not perform immediately but love when they do: reading the content aloud. You have edited it. You are almost there. But here are some final and genuine tips that actually make your assignment stand out from others.

Use hedging language. Academic writing does not deal in certainties. Instead of writing, “This proves that remote work increases productivity,” write “The evidence shows that remote work may contribute to increased productivity in certain contexts.” This sounds more measured and is exactly what academic writing asks for.

Connect to the UAE and GCC context. An assignment that looks like it was written by any student from god knows which country means it sounds generic. Writing an assignment for UAE universities must have references if the institution allows. Discuss Gulf business culture, GCC economic trends, or regional case studies. This shows that you are applying country-relevant content in your assignment and not just parroting theory.

Keep formatting clean and consistent. Use the same font size and style throughout. Use heading levels consistently. Keep your line spacing uniform. It sounds minor, but inconsistent formatting is distracting and signals a lack of care.

Back your work up obsessively. Save to Google Drive. Email yourself the document. Use OneDrive if your university provides it. A corrupted file or a crashed laptop the night before a deadline is not a situation any UAE university will grant an extension for.

Submit ahead of the deadline. Aim to submit at least three to four hours before the portal closes. University submission systems slow down dramatically as deadlines approach. Do not be the student refreshing the page at 11:58 PM.

Final Words

The hidden truth about assignment writing is that students who consistently perform well are not necessarily academically god gifted. They are the ones who take the process seriously, start early, and keep improving their skills with every assignment.

Knowing how to make an assignment effectively is a learnable skill. Every assignment you write teaches you something about your own thinking, writing, and the ability to construct a coherent argument and submit the task within the deadline.

If you are working through a particularly challenging assignment right now and feel like you need expert support, our team at CIPD Assignment Help works specifically with UAE students across a wide range of disciplines. We do not just fix drafts — we help you understand what makes strong academic writing so you can replicate it yourself.

FAQs

1. What is the first step for writing a great academic assignment?

The first step is to carefully read and decode the assignment brief. Analyze the given instructions, the core topic, the word count, and the required referencing style to ensure you meet all the grading criteria before starting.

2. How long should an introduction be for a university-level assignment?

For most university assignments, your introduction should make up 5% to 10% of your total word count. A standard 2,000-word essay must have 1 to 2 paragraphs or roughly 100 to 200 words.

3. How many references should I include?

The number of references to add depends on the given guidelines and subject. A common academic rule of thumb is to include about 1 reference per 100 to 150 words. For a 1,000-word assignment, add 8-12 sources.

4. What reference style is used in UAE universities?

Most universities in the UAE primarily use APA (7th edition) and Harvard referencing styles.
